Hi Kosmo,

not sure about the 500 series, but if they are connectable to a PC via a PC connection kit, they should be upgradeable using the HumminBird PC software.

My 2 cents

I know for sure that the 700 series unit and up is software upgradeable.

The unit without SD card slot are done via the PC Connect Cable.

I've done it numerous time on a 718 and to up/dnload waypoint and tracks.

It really depends on which unit it is Kosmo.
Which model do you have or are thinking about getting?

Normally you are talking a 700 series unit than Kosmos but I think that I saw in the 2011 catalog that some of the new 500 series units will have software upgrades.  I’m not at work today so I cannot confirm this.  Anyone have a 2011 catalog and can look at the pages in the back to see if lists any of them as being software upgradable?

In the catalog, no 500 series unit feature internal software upgrade...

Only 700 series

If you talk about the Side Imaging, yes, it's a misprint...

I have seen this same "misprint" in several places  >:(and it got me on the wrong track when I was trying to decide what to buy.
Not sure where this description originates, but it is pure deception as far as I am concerned.  It talks about down and side imaging technology..........doesn't specifically say the unit has side imaging, but sure insinuates that it does.  >:( >:(
If this originated from Humminbird, I think they should be working hard to correct it.  Seems like the documentation is Humminbirds weakest point.

You have to be really careful and ask a lot of questions.  There is a lot of subtle misinformation out there.

Cabelas did the same thing when they had the 2010 798ci si on a closeout sale.  They used the 2011 name for the unit in their ad, and some of there customer service people were even telling people it was the 2011 units.  There were posts all over the place with people trying to figure out what the advertised unit actually was.

Sorry, guess I needed to do a New Years vent.

The Misprint comes from the guys who made the website as that particular description is for the ENTIRE 700 Series unit...

If you read it correctly, it contains no error. It's just that webmaster use it to describe particular unit and not the entire series...

You should only use the official humminbird website to make sure you made the correct decision. Since most vendors don't have a clue to what they sells!

You are right, that is a general description of the "700 series".  I hadn't realized that before.

I have seen this description mistakenly used for many of the new DI units.

Kosmo,
Any of the 700 series units is upgradeable so you could go with the 788ci HD DI or any of the other 700 series unit.
