Title: Down Imaging
Post by: Wallin on November 25, 2012, 12:35:10 PM
I am confused with the listing of the different DI systems out there.  I am looking to pick one up but would like some clarity on the following terms.

Down Imaging® Sonar

Down Imaging™

SwitchFire downlooking sonar

High-Def Side Imaging®/Down Imaging®

I want to make sure I get the right unit for me.

The first 2 are the same, the 3rd one is more or less related to 2d conventional sonar, and the last is using the side imaging sonar to create the down imaging view.

Which ones are the best?

Side Imaging would be the best because you would get a left and right image plus combining those would get you the down imaging, 3rd image.  Then you would still have your conventional 2d. The more sonar beams the better.

I meant which down imaging was the best.  I want to go with the side but want the best down as well.

I think the most clear down imaging is from transducers that
have dedicated crystals for that.
Otherwise, the sofware will just combine the two side-images into
a down image.

Down imaging is as it states, looking straight down.
It's just a different look than regular 2-d sonar.

In my opinon, down-imaging is way overrated.
I could never make out anything on my 1197c.
It wasn't very clear looking.
I dont' even use it anymore, and have hidden the down-imaging views.
I prefer 2-d conventional sonar for on the water.
And side-imaging for recording and reviewing at home.

I think you can't go wrong by getting the best side-imaging
unit you can.
If it also has dedicated crystals for down-imaging, then so much
the better.

I agree with above.  The dedicated DI crystal is much better that the SI/DI.  I have the 1198 and the SI is amazing but the DI is a little lackluster.  It works ok but not near the quality of the dedicated DI units.  But Its ok. I still seem to always come back to the traditional 2d sonar and humminbirds 2d is fantastic!!!

I am curious as to your need for the best DI. The order in which I use my options are
1st- SI-- to locate targets efficiently.
2nd- 2D-- to fine tune location.
3rd- DI-- just to get a different look at a known target. I find this view the most difficult to understand as it varies so much.
I use this view less than 5% of the time.
