Helix 9 SI GPS trolling motor mount noise on on SI only
« on: September 02, 2016, 10:17:30 PM »
I have a Helix 9 SI GPS mounted on my trolling motor. (Minn Kota Power drive V2). First time out everything worked fine for about 2 hours. Then I  got considerable noise on the SI display only. All the other views are fine. In simulator mode SI works fine. Thinking the noise is coming thru the transducer or its wiring. Considering the possibility of finding a way to mount the transducer on a separate bow mount if necessary. Since I am pretty new to all of this, I am looking for what to do to eliminate all the noise. Is a separate bow mount good or bad? If good, any suggestions as to where to get a mount?T

Troubleshoot the interference by removing the xducer from the TM and hang it in the water far away from the TM ...

If this proves the interference is indeed caused by the TM - HB can help with possible solutions to remedy (or mediate) the interference ...

1-800-633-1468

It could be as simple as a blown ground fuse in the head of the TM ...

It could be as bad as worn brushes, a bent TM prop shaft or a nick in the xducer cable ...

Thanks. I'm in NC right and won't  be home for a couple of weeks so I'll check it when I get home. I do hear a tick coming from the trolling motor at about 1 second intervals. Does not vary with the speed. There also seems to be a very slight wobble in the prop. I figured it was probably in the propeller itself. The motor is still under warranty so I'm assuming it would be covered if that is the problem. I just had in in for a broken steering box and it was covered by the warranty.
I did talk to Humminbird and they gave me a list of trouble shooting possibilities.  Living 30 miles from a lake makes it hard to check them out. Think your suggestion for taking the xducer off the TM and putting it in the water away from the TM sounds good. Will certainly tell if the problem is coming from the TM or not.
Finally, if the problem is withthe TM do you not like a separate mount for the xducer or is th a time more trouble than it is worth?

As an added note, I just figured out that my 598ci HD SI combo that I have mounted on the console and transom mount transducer is the same xducer on both units. Therefore if I swap places with the units, it should narrow down the problem. Will have to wait a c ouple of weeks until I get home,  but it post what I find then.

Well finally home and think I found the problem. I removed the transducer from the TM and moved it away. No noise. Put it within about 6", noise. Also get noise when I put it within 6" of the TM head and cable going to the motor (MK Power Drive V2). So I have ordered the bow mount bracket. Also moved the Helix 9 SI to the console and reinstalling my Helix 7 DI on the front. I took it off previously after I started getting noise on it when the TM was on. I had a 598 SI at the console but the display is just too small for my 72 yo eyes. Plan on replacing my Helix 7 with a 10 later. Also curious about why I originally had a clear display and then about a year later the noise showed up?
