New member trying to figure out my 999 (image problems)
« on: March 13, 2016, 03:34:39 PM »
So Ive had my 999 si for over a year and we have had our ups and downs.  Its installed on a 17ft aluminum basstracker with a 25 2 stroke. I also have a 598 si on the trolling motor which works great (just wish I had a bigger screen). The 999 works great 90% of the time but the other 10% it acts funny.  It seems i am getting interference from somewhere but I am at a loss. It has all the newest software updates. The image i have attached shows one of the thing it will do sometimes.  Other times it produces this poor quality on both sides. Still other times while in sonar mode it will produce slanted lines that run from the bottom toward the top of the screen as it is scrolling. At first I though it was a fish swimming from the bottom up to check out the boat, but now it does it all over the place, but only for a short time and then it stops.  Other times i will be running SideImaging and make a U turn to re-scan an area and it produces an image that looks very similar to a bait fish cloud, but its definitely not bait fish.  Has anyone else had this problem.  I just found out how to record what my unit is doing (which led me to this site!) so next weekend when i get out on the water I will try to record when it does these things.  Any ideas whats going on? Thanks for the help in advance.

I struggled with image quality on my 999 for the first year.  My screens looked like yours.  I fiddled with sensitivity, contrast, etc with little lasting effect.  It turned out to be a little turbulence due to my hull.  As soon as I slowed the boat down below 4mph and set the chart speed to 4mph it all went away.  2D works great at almost any speed but the SI/DI are really affected by speed at least on my boat.

The bait fish like cloud could well be prop wash from you previous pass.  Any small air bubbles in the water will look like a cloud of bait.

Hmm okay. Yeah like I said it works fairly good most of the time.  In that image i did notice I was going about 6 mph.  Im going to look at my transducer mount and take some pictures to make sure its in a good position.  I was thinking the same thing about prop wash when turning, but it seems like it will show prop wash in 80ft of water. I mean it will show a cloud all the way from the surface to the bottom. Haha no way the ol lil 25 is throwing bubbles down that deep. Im wondering more and more if my transducer is mounted properly.  I had my 598 mounted in the exact same location and it never gave me any of this feedback.
Any ideas on what diagonal streaks on the 2d would mean? it just dose it randomly sometimes and then stops.

Diagonal streaks on the 2d image are usually bubbles rising from the bottom of the lake ...and because the 2d display is "scrolling" - the echoes are slanted from left to right ...

Are you running another unit at the same time ??... If so ..your SI image issue may be crosstalk interference ...

Thanks for replying rickie. No I haven't been running the two units at the same time. The 598 is on the trolling motor and I pull it up when I am cruising around with the 2 stroke. I'll have to see if I can get some good screen shots of it next Sunday when I'm out on the lake. If they are bubbles, they are some mighty big ones and rising really fast!
