Garmin transducer for SI
« on: March 28, 2014, 05:29:30 AM »
Here I have found thath garmin has launched SI and down imaging on their products...
I'am interested in this transdcuers (because are less expensive than humminbird's)...

https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/shop-by-accessories/transom%20mount%20transducers%20/all-in-one-hd-id-and-downvu-transducer-8-pin-/prod145793.html#gallery-dialog

GARMIN 010-12089-00 TRANSOM SIDEVU/DOWNVU TRANSDUCER

Get ultra-clear sonar pictures of objects, structure and fish that pass below and to the side of your boat with this 12-pin transducer.

This comes with a 20 ft transducer cable, built-in fast response temperature sensor and has a power rating of 500 W per element (1,500 W total); a depth of 750 ft (DownVü) and 500 ft left and right (SideVü); an operating frequency of 455/800 kHz; and a 0 to 70 transom angle. Pair it with your GCV™ 10 black box sonar.

Transducer comes with installation instructions. Follow the instructions carefully to avoid damaging your boat.

So, you want to use a Garmin transducer on your Humminbird?
I'd be careful and do a lot of research before buying.
I'd wait and see if someone successfully used one with good results.

I can't find the connector schema but the side scan work's on the same freq as humminbird and lowrance..

Who knows.
It might work.
I think you are going to be breaking new ground, and
charting unknown waters.
Good luck if you try it.

Peter,
This would be a project that is similar to my "treason project" with the LSS-2. The LSS-2 does work, but nobody can tell if it's possible also with the Garmin transducers. The only rational reason (disregarding costs) for trying with these transducers is narrower horizontal beam with a longer transducer. My guess is.... yes, it works also with Garmin transducers, because the SI frequencies are the same and because transducers use to be rather simple devices with just a few piezo elements and some wires inside. The LSS-2 has 9 pins, but the Garmins have 12. This is a bit puzzling because it's difficult to see the reason for that number of pins. Perhaps some of them are not used? You will have to go through some trial-and-error testing risking your unit, but if you succeed you will feel quite satisfied... and have better horizontal resolution than before. Dont forget about the new HB transducers for the ONIX and ION models. They are not intended for the older units, however, I bet they can be adapted for your unit too.

Using SI transducers which are longer than the standard HDSI transducers does not enhance the display image to any significant extent while on water, but the difference is very clear when recordings are inspected with a computer.

If you use the slimmer Garmin transducer, you will need an extra 200 kHz downsensing transducer. This will add to costs, like the extra cables will. In the end I don't think this will be a cheaper solution.

Rickard.. totaly true..
Garmin has 2 different transducers..
first 8 pin has side imaging , down imaging and temp sensor..

Other longer sensor has only SI but as you say it has 12 "pins"..

The reason I prefer - looking for other transducer is simply because I had problems with (actual HDSI transducer from humminbird)... LSS2 is also expensive and you also need other transducer for 2d (200/83)..

Also humminbird has 5 pins on connector side but inside cable there are 6 wires + gnd...

I'am interested in Garmin model "All-in-one HD-ID™ and DownVü™ Transducer (8-pin)" (first image)...

8-pin colud be (left side, right side, 2d and temp sensor all with 2 wires (signal + gnd))...

Do you think that Garmin can bring us a schema of their transducer (schema of conector and signals)? I don't think that they have a digital transducer.. (will be less wires ;) )

When I use HB unit I allways record sonar data and then review the datas in humview.. In feew time I will make a recording for some Italian friends.. We are looking fo 9 torpedos for II. world war (torpedos 9 meter in length 1.5 in diameter)..

Do not confuse. Only 2d and DownVu(DownImaging)
SideVu(SideImaging) no.

You can always ask, but the answer from manufacturers use to be "this is proprietary". Airmar delivers transducers to several sonar manufacturers (not to HB, i think) and they have presented wiring diagrams with their products. Perhaps Airmar makes the Garmin transducers....?

hi
I think this ducer can work with humminbird,
I supose it's done for CHIRP system, (large value of depht sounding , 77 to 200 khz)  and 800 or 455 for scan in down imaging

the opération may be simple to do a Di system.

Month ago I have written some recension in slovenian diving magazine about side scan sonar and presented humminbird model 998c with some open source program to manage waypoints and sonar files... After that a Garmin manager has contacted me and bring me Garmin black box (module for side scan and down scan) + echomap 70s touch screen device...

First impression is misted.. a lot of cables and two transducers...
I will do some tests and compare it with my Humminbird 998c which has 1 transducer and incorporated side scan / down scan and only one connector ;)

Yes I have tested it... It's a touch screen sonar with very fast and acurate GPS.
The major minus is the black box and a lot of connectors and wires.. The unit is ok if you have a plan to leave it fixed inside the boat but in my case I have a RIB and I must allways take off the unit when I go home..
Also the side image is working well but garmin has a very weak software for reviewing recorded files it's name is HomePort. It has very poor functionality so I prefer HumViewer..

Maybe is better this unit with incorporated GPS antenna and side scan unit: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-the-water/fishfindergpscombos/echomap-73sv/prod169422.html
