Converting *.ht files to something useful
« on: August 29, 2013, 07:29:55 PM »
Has anyone been able to convert Humminbird trackfiles *.ht) to something importable into common mapping programs? I have tried Humminbird PC as well as EasyGPS (which does not recognize Humminbird files) and GPSBabel with no success. We need to map a trackline of a boat from which a man went missing and drowned. We have done this before with Garmin GPS units, but Humminbird, well....... Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Would you define "common mapping program"?  And what format(s) do you need?

You can download the .HT file into HumminbirdPC and that format will be .GPX, then have HBPC display the track in Google Earth.  The Google Earth track can be saved as a .KML is that helps.

Gpsbabel should be able to convert straight from the .HT to .KML also.

The mapping program we use is FUGAWI. It will import every GPS makers tracks except Humminbird.

Another individual used HB PC and could only see 125 of the reported 21,000 plus data points. I have tried HB PC and it reports the same HT file is empty.

This track file came from a model 587 and won't display on Humviewer.

Hi Gene,
You could try loading the track in ReefMaster - click my link. You can do it all in the trial version, so you won't need to buy it.
If that doesn't work you may have a problem with the file itself - especially so since HBPC normally reads them OK. If you can still see the file on your unit, then perhaps try exporting them again. If that still doesn't work you can send the files to me and I can see if if I can extract the data for you.

Thanks, Matt!

I think the problem might be that the IT person downloaded the files on an SD card, then emiled them to me. I understand there may be some hidden files that may not have gotten included in the email and that may be the problem. Although I don't know why he could only see 125 points from the reported 21,836.

Hi Gene,
There are no hidden files that I am aware of that accompany HT files. Each HT file contains all of the information required to extract the track data. HBPC does expect to see the files in a folder called MATRIX, but it sounds like the file is being found OK, so that cannot be the problem.
Feel free to send me the problem HT file info@reefmaster.com.au - they are only 128k or so.

Thank you very much Matt! Now I just need to export the file as something I can import into FUGAWI.

Hi Gene,
Great! I'm not sure what was going on with HBPC..

Just right click the track name in the track list at the left of the window, and select "write to file". You can then choose GPX as the export format, which should import fine into fugawi.

Matt, Thank you so much! Your program has succeeded where Humminbird failed. Thanks again!

Gene, given the fact that this is someone else's data, we don't know how they created it. could be a problem there. Given that the file was copied and sent via the internet there could be a problem there.
On another thought have you tried to take the .ht and make an excel file out of it? And then extract the gps points?

Matt's program worked well. Only problem now is apparently does not store date and time in their track file. Data that is VERY critical. HB are you listening?
