998ci - Won’t display Navionics card data
« on: December 09, 2018, 04:31:06 PM »
Hopefully another forum member has already run across this issue and I’m just overlooking a menu setting.   The issue? 998 unit will not show Navionics HotMaps lake info and countour data.  Steps taken: 1. Updated 998 system firmware. 2. Erased directory data. 3. Reset factory setting. 4. Purchased new Navionics Platinum card and downloaded update. 5. GPS link (puck)shows connected. 6. MMC/SD card shows installed. 7. Front 788ci and Interlink, share wavepoint data with 998 without issue.   Front 778 unit has older Navionics card and it shows countor lines, lake info.

998 (console unit)map views display blank white topology with large square grid bars.  Trace route crumbs show, but no Nav card data, countor/shoreline, etc..  The down and side scan functions work great.

Suggestions, tips, troubleshooting ideas???

Remove the map card and insert a blank SD card  ...

Then enable ScreenShots under the Accessories tab and try to capture a ScreenShot  ...

Enable "Snapshot  and Recording" view under the Views tab, exit out of the Menus, cycle thru the views to the Snapshot and Recording view to see if the unit successfully has written a ScreenShot to the SD card  ...

If yes, the unit card reader is reading and writing correctly (test both card slots)  ...

Suspect the Navionics card if the unit card reader(s) work correctly  ....

Navionics contact here  ...
https://www.navionics.com/usa/support/contact-us

Can you test the Navionics card in a different HB head unit  ...??

Hi Rickie - thank you for the response.  Tests run tonight from driveway: 1. Inserted a blank SD card, enabled Snapshot Recording and recorded four sessions (2 using right slot, 2 using left slot).  The 998 recorded Snapshots and played them back.  Uninstalled the SD card from console 998 and installed SD card into bow 788 unit.  The Snapshot recordings did play back on the bow unit.

2. Installed the new Navionics Hotmaps card in the 788 (bow unit).  Power-on, View screen over to maps and it does show yellow topology and wave points set on area lakes.  The same Nav card does NOT show that detail when installed in the console 998 unit.  Keeping in-mind the missing wave points on the 998 is expected, due to Directory Erase.  But the yellow contours and surrounding area lakes should be visible.

3. Installed the older Navionics card (from bow unit) into the 998 and No lakes, No yellow boarders or wave points display.

Sooooo… The 998 SD card reader appears to be working.  Also the new Navionics card appears to work in a different unit.   And regardless of which Navionics card is installed into the 998, it doesn't show contour or surrounding lakes.  Also this last weekend on the water the bow 788 unit showed all depth contour and Nav data.  The console 998 unit - Negative.  Just the blank white screen with grid bars.

Look under the Chart tab for "Chart Detail Level" and verify it is set to "All" (which is default if you Restore Defaults)  ...

Yes- Doublechecked Chart Detail menu and its set to "All".  Still no Nav chip detail.

I'm beginning to suspect a firmware or operating system issue.  Some code or setting is blocking the Nav chip detail from loading.  There must be a way to walk the firmware/software code or obtain a tech doc that shows the required menu settings that enable the Nav chip detail.  The basic user manual options have been exhausted.

The Humminbird website lists the 998 as non serviceable, but possibly the code used in this unit is similar to current models.  Is there a way to contact Humminbird software engineers?  Or possibly review a old list of 998 known issues and software patches that fix know errors?  Sometimes a patch introduces a new bug that disables features that did work before the update.

There are several 998 versions in our download forum if you want to try a different version  ...

998c and 998cHD have different versions so be aware of your specific unit  ...

Always Restore Defaults before and after installing software  ...

(Note disclaimer: there's always a risk in bricking when backdating software)
