i have a picture that i will post here in a little bit. ive got to find it, but i think there is something about the new transducer that is different  or it could be just the difference  in the two units.

I purchased mine (997)  new in 2010 with the 50 channel GPs. The 998 was out already . I assume the transducer was the same. While it was a discontinued model, Hummingbird was still packaging the 997s and it seems still assembling them.  I would be interested in knowing if the tranducers are improved.

maybe if you post the numbers on the transducer cable humminbird greg can tell you if it is the newer transducer. i have the older 997 with the 16 channel gps. i must say that i do believe that the 50 channel seams to lock on quicker. ive been looking at some of my 997 snapshots thou and some of them look pritty good compared to some of the newer ones that i have with the 998. so im still not sure i havnt hgad the 998 very long.  heres a picture that i took 2 or 3 years ago with 997. its the same coffer dam picture just not at the full 360 ft. range like in the 998 pictures .this picture was shot using the 455khz.the third picture above of the coffer dam was shot using 455khz the others 800khz.( but its still not really a far comparision because the snapshots dont look as good as whats actually being displayed on the unit live at the time )

As a side note to GPS..  50 channel capability is fine but you will need 50 satelites to max it out.  Most of the time we only see about a dozen on the horizon.  I heard there was only 23 or 24 satelites in the sky anyway.  and that is all around the world.

Bad timing.. I just stored my boat Friday with the Transducer attached . Something I would like to follow up with in the spring tho.

The only changes to the HDSi transducers has been the addition of the shielding layer inside the transducer.  This happened around August of 2008.  Not sure when your 997 was built and packaged but unless you have some sort of interference you should be able to get the same images with the older or newer extra shielded HDSi transducer.

Those extra channels in the GR50 are used to get faster acquisition of the available satellites which means faster cold and warm starts for the GPS.  The most satellites I have seen a Screen Snapshot for was 14 satellites.  Chuck is right though as most will see fewer than that most of the time.

Thanks Greg

It was purchased Radioworld and was fresh inventory as it was on order as they received a shipment of a bunch of them in spring of 2010 and came packaged with the 50 channel GPS. (aside:I havent checked the satellite count since I first installed the unit and dont recal the number but I recall seeing quite a few)

The serial number on the 997CX starts with 1005 and ends with 23 if that helps. the transducer is on the transom of my boat which is offsite in storage till spring.

Here are some images from a lake in South Western Quebec, Cobourg marina Lake Ontario and Big Rideau Lake (Ontario)

this image is at the mouth of the marina bay (lighthouse and wharf on the right) at Cobourg ON
assuming I can figure out how to post them ;)
