Title: 1198 Transducer
Post by: hop1234 on April 05, 2012, 11:36:42 AM
I'm looking to buy an 1198. I already have an 797, which at present is mounted on transom. I am planning on moving 797 to trolling motor and mounting 1198 on transom. After a little trial and error I found a spot  on transom  to mount transducer that reads well ,both at idle for SI ,and at speed without losing bottom.  Has done fine there for 3 years. My boat tops out at 28 mph. It is a Lund Angler 1650. motor mounted on transom with no jackplate. It has a wood  board for mounting transducer attached to transom.  Do you think mounting the 1198 transducer in exact same spot will produce same results? I understand physical size is bigger. I am hoping to not have a 2nd transducer just for 1198. Also if a 2nd transducer is needed is there one that does not go thru hull., as i do not want to drill hole and being aluminum don't think shoot-thru would work.  Then for mounting 797 on trolling motor. Is there a SI transducer made for this ? A mounting bracket to use with transducer that originally came with 797? A shield to mount to protect it?            thanks

If you are putting the 1198 on the console, then you have to use the long transducer that
comes with it.
I would try and put it in the same sweet spot that you found, but lots of
guys have trouble losing bottom readings when going fast.
The longer transducer may cause more water turbulence.
I'm not sure about the brackets.

Good luck.

I’m with ITG on the new larger HDSi transducer: try it in that same sweet spot first and than deal with another transducer but only if you have to.

There is a trolling motor mount version of the 797’s transducer: XTM-9-Si-180-T
It has some additional shielding built into it for countering trolling motor interference that the standard transom mount one does not have.  There are also adapter brackets available for the transom mount transducer you have to allow them to be mounted to the trolling motor.  There are a few companies that make trolling motor brackets that will help shield and protect your trolling motor mounted transducer too (Transducer Shield & Saver,  Raptor,  Transducer Armor) but these only work with the transom mount version of the 797’s transducer.

Thanks for the replies .  I will mount the 1198 transducer in the same sweet spot and hope for the best, but  i always seem to have the exact opposite happen. As I like to be prepared with a plan "B", is there a transducer that mounts to the transom in addition to the SI transducer? Or if the 2nd transducer is needed, are the only options, that hook up to the 1198, thru the hull(drill a hole in hull , which i won"t do) or shoot thru the hull?  What have others done?  Are there success stories with the SI transducer working at troll and high speed.

Most of the stories with the HDSI transducer is that it does not give depth above trolling speeds.
Also it can be effected by motor shafts and prop.
Most with these two problems run a shoot thru the hull additional transducer..

Well to begin with; most don’t mount their HDSi transducers for high speed depth reading usage.  Most use a second inside-the-hull DualBeam transducer for that but this is on fiberglass boats.  For aluminum boats I would guess that more try and use the HDSi transducer for high speed depth readings but as with any transducer on an aluminum boat; they are not successful in doing so (or at least in the ones who posts comments about their experiences).

Options would be either a second transom mounted transducer (XNT-9-20 with the AS-Si-DB-Y cable) or possibly an inside-the-hull transducer built by another company (RadarSonics) that is made for inside-the-hull mounting on aluminum boats called the AlumaDucer.  I have not heard of a lot of success stories with it.

Thanks for the responses and info . Nice to know about the XNT-9-20 and splitter.

hop1234, try the new HDSI transducer in your known sweet spot. If it works well fine, if not go to the through hull transducer and a trolling motor mount for the other unit.

Oh ya, check the forward edge of the HDSI transducer after each use, the transducer have separating where the upper and lower outer half are glued together. Seems there might be a MFG/QC problem somewhere! I have had two fail at this point.

I haven’t seen many posts about this Roddy.  Maybe you are just lucky (not in a good way)?

Ya Chuck, After just a few hours low speed water run time the upper and lower fwd half start to separating.

Called HP CS the women there acted as if I were nuts then asked for a few PIX of the transducer, email her the PIX, four month ago and I have not received a word from HB CS.

1. Boat is used at 25 mph max.
2. Boat is used with fwd scanning sonar at all times. No I have not hit anything.

Did they replace the transducer Roddy?
If not, you should follow back up with them.

Greg, No word or replacement from HB CS. Roddy

They will probably not replace the transducer unless you send it in but they should have responded to the email.  If you still have it, try sending it again.  Can you tell me whom this was addressed to or was it just sent into the general customer service email address?

Roddy,
You may need to stay on them.
They might have forgotten about you.

That is my concern ITG: “They might have forgotten about you”.
We have gone through some personnel changes in this department and I just want to make sure that he did not fall in between the cracks with that or our normal customer services.

Question, if you contact via email with a conceern do you get a tracking number?
How do we track responses from HB if electronic?

“Question, if you contact via email with a conceern do you get a tracking number?”
Hmmm, I don’t really know as I have never done this.  I assume that you do not get a tracking number though.  Maybe someone who has done this recently can post back on this question.

“How do we track responses from HB if electronic?”
You would have the email reply from Humminbird if you sent them a message Chuck – just like any other email response.

what if you dont get a reply or a standard "do not reply" ack message..?
would be nice to get tracking if reporting a problem and asking for help...
I know Greg....more software...more cost.,.

Actually more people this time Chuck.  With the volume of email that we get we struggle now to answer them within a few days or so.  This is with some of the Customer Resource folks working after hours as well as from home.  This is one of the reasons that we encourage folks to call in.  Plus we have had messages from certain internet providers get blocked for one reason or another.  What does not help is when people email and than call in… we have to do double duty for the same communication.

If you don’t hear back from an email inquiry after a week, reply back again if this was to an individual person and you have their email address or just resend your original message if it was to the generic customer service email address.

Maybe you could add a email for trouble reporting.  That way the automated response could assign a tracking number.

Darn, it sure is tough to have to work for a living these days... ;D

That may not be a bad idea to have separate email addys for problems versus other communications Chuck.  Most of the calls and messages we get are inquiry types: How do I do this, will this work or can I exchange or connect this to that… still, if you feel that you may have been forgotten: email them back.

Now for the working for a living part… I don’t have an alternative for that right now.  Anyone know of six or seven lucky numbers?   ;D
