Size of SD card for updating my 899
« on: February 21, 2015, 05:24:50 PM »
I've read some posts of people saying they used Sand Disk Extreme 4 GB or 8 GB for recording.   From what I've gathered people apparently are finding things they want recorded so they can put in on the computer at home and review when they have more time.  I don't think I'll be recording anything anytime soon.  I just need to know what size SD card I need for updating my HB 899 SI to version 7.460 software.  I am new to this.

I use Sandisk 16gb Class 10 cards for recording and updating.  If you can install and learn how to use Humviewer you will find it is a great tool to review recordings.  I'll notice some things watching Humviewer that I may have missed watching the playback on my 899.  It has also trained me to adjust the settings on the 899 to pickup those missed items.  For instance, I missed seeing an area full of bass beds until I was watching it in Humviewer.  I then played the recording to the same area, adjusted sensitivity and contrast and then I could see them on the unit.

Updates are pretty small ... So any size SD Card up to 32Gb will work ...

Faster write speed cards have an advantage only when recording or taking Screenshots because the unit writes the Recording and Screenshot data directly to the SD Card ... Faster write speeds just make this more efficient ...

What I ended up buying was a Sandisk 16GB SDHC.  No idea what the SDHC means.  I hope this will be ok.

You will be fine. The "HC" stands for high capacity.

This is probably a dumb question.  Once I follow the directions and upload the new version into the unit, I assume I can take the SD out.  Right?

And then I can erase what's on it and use the same SD for recording if I choose to do so ?

Once the unit is updated you can take the card out.  You can erase it if you want to because if you ever need to re-install the update you can go to "My Humminbird" and download the version or newer version later.

I always keep my old software revisions on my computer ..... you never know when you may want to go back to an older release.........but you don't need to keep it on an SD card in your unit.  Once it is loaded, it is better not to have it in the unit.

Bob, I like the idea of keeping the version on my computer.  It didn't seem that it was a huge file.  I suppose to do that I stick the SD card in my computer and copy that the file on that drive (whatever drive it is....L drive, I think, on my computer) to my computer's hard drive.  Then I've got if I need it again.

That would do it jworks.
I would set up a set of folders for this and for any other Humminbird data (like waypoint files).
