Title: Screens Freeze
Post by: TMC on May 19, 2018, 09:10:53 AM
I'm running two Humminbirds on my boat, a 698ci on the front and a 798ci at the driver's position. Both transducers are mounted on the transom.
I recently upgraded my motor to a Mercury 115HP XPS and now when I hit about 25 MPH both screens freeze. The controls are frozen as well. I have to power off with my main switch and restart them to get an image back. Any clues would be appreciated.

I'm not sure what boat speed would have to do with any type of freezing issue  ...

Sounds like a possible low voltage problem  ...

Can you have the battery load tested  ...??

How are the units wired to power  ...??

Thanks,

I haven't had time to get back to this since my last trip but thought about connecting a DVM directly to the battery to watch the voltage level as I accelerated.

The units are wired through the main fuse block after the power switch. I'd like to keep them after that switch, otherwise I'll have to pull them off the mount to power cycle them if they freeze again.

I thought that someone might have had a similar occurrence and possible tried a filter capacitor or voltage regulator on the power leads.

Existing boat wiring is not recommended for powering electronics  ...

It's usually too small a wire Guage  ... With too many connections that can cause voltage drop  ...

It is recommended to install dedicated 12-14 Guage wire direct to the battery with a fuse  ...

These units are very susceptible to issues with low or dirty power  ...
