Title: HB PC and Google Earth
Post by: edwardpic on August 24, 2011, 08:03:49 AM
After uploading my navigation waypoints/info to HB PC how would I go about seeing them in Google Earth?....I have to rename some waypoints-re: now=19 want it to say say rock pile....without hooking my unit up in the boat and scrolling around to different areas then writing them down on paper to edit....I'd like to pull them up on Google maps and see which to edit that way...

thanks

Google Earth will directly read the GPX file and show you your waypoints; however it does not export in the gpx format.  You would have to export in the kml format and use GPSBabel to convert it to GPX.

A better idea, if you just want to see the spatial relationship between waypoints, (no background map) and edit them, is to use EasyGPS.  GPX in and out.

If I'm understanding you correctly...

Just highlight the point(s), right click and select view in Google Earth (assuming it's installed on your computer).  It will lauch the GE app and display your point(s).

If you have a lot of tracks or routes stored in the .gpx file, it is best to go down a level and highlight just the waypoints for display in Google Earth. If you highlight the whole .gpx file, it can take Google Earth a LONG time to load and display your data.

You should have a Google Earth icon in the Humminbird tool bar that turns blue when you select either a .gpx file or its waypoints, tracks, or routes. You can click that icon instead of using the right mouse button in order to display the selected data in Google Earth.

Editing a file name is done in Humminbird PC, not in Google Earth. Just put your cursor in the name field of an existing waypoint and type in a new name.

Thanks Doc....I have no routes saved or anything, just looking to view my waypoints on GE so i can which numbered waypoints are grouped together....when I hit mark while out I dont name it right then...Ive marked a lot of spots and its getting confusing...So..If I can see them in GE then I know which are grouped together in one area so I can edit them in HB PC, I realize GE is just for viewing...I have GE and HB PCF installed, but, have only used them one or twice....

I look at my points in google earth as well. I also have the side imaging record a snapshot of the view onto my sd card which can then be downloaded and viewed on your computer. I look at the snapshot of the side imaging and google earth to rename my coordinates in HB PC. I can determine what it is on the bottom and rename it sitting on the couch instead of on the water. Works great.
