Title: What am I doing wrong?
Post by: legendaryyaj on May 23, 2011, 02:20:12 PM
I picked up the unit brand new about 2 months ago and have only been on the water with it like 6 times because of work but not getting to work right is really frustrating me. I have called HB tech and they are sending me a new transducer but I was wondering if anyone here could still help me out til I get the transducer.

In short to make things easier, here's a video of a recording I did on the water:

798ci HD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-c8ylS1wdg#)

My problem is that above 3mph the screen goes black but below it it gives a reading but nothing of significant value. Just blurrs and my DI doesnt have an image at all. I would think it would at least give me a readout of some sort.

I am using the unit as a portable unit and the mount shown is the last option I have of mounting it before I HAVE to buy a boat. I did the trolling motor transom mount first and that didn't work so I did the HB suction cup kit and that didn't work either. I'm now onto the mount kit from Cabela's and it's all giving me the same picture. The 2d works fine but the DI and SI just looks like it does in the video. Nothing.

The unit is always on it's own battery and I have made sure there are no clearance issues and if there was, I'm assuming at least the side that doesn't have a clearance issue would show up fine. Only other thing I can think of is turbulence but can it really distort my picture that much? I've read and and watched all the youtube vids on this and can't find my answer. Is there something that I am missing? Settings or something?

I took the unit over the weekend and ran it on my cousins basstracker and made sure everything was fine and it had the same issue but I had to set the sensitivity to max to get a real LIGHT image of the same picture. Again 2d was fine.

Sounds like it could be the transducer that is causing this.  Can you read the label on the transducer cable to make sure that you have the right one?  It should be near the connector end.  The problem is either in the unit or transducer.  If you can; test your unit on someone else’s boat that has a Humminbird Side Imaging unit (any model will work) or wait for the transducer and try it.

That’s the right transducer.  See if you can test your unit on someone else’s boat.

The same problem may occur if you got wrong horizontal angel on the transducer!
