sd card slots
« on: April 01, 2017, 06:58:31 PM »
I have a 798 si, di, I put an sd card in the right slot, and tried to save a waypoint, and it gave me the message no writable sd card found. I moved the card to the left slot and got the same message...I then took a flashlight and shined in the right slot, and it looks broken inside. Is the right slot Proprietary, to where the left one won't work unless the right one does? Does anybody have and idea on cost to repair the sd slot?, Is it even worth it?

1st - Waypoints are written the internal memory ... Not to the SD Card ...

The only time a Waypoint cannot be saved to the internal memory is if Screenshot is enabled under the Accessories tab and there is no SD Card in either card slot ...

This scenario "could" also happen if the SD Card slots are not working correctly and screenshots is enabled under the Accessories tab ...

Remove the SD Card - disable Screenshot under the Accessories tab and try to save a Waypoint ...

If the Waypoint saves correctly - you may have non-working SD Card slots which can be fixed by HB ... But at a flat (expensive) service fee ...

I'm about 99.5 % certain theres a sd slot problem, you can feel something's wrong when you insert the sd card, and when you shine a light down into the slot you can see something that looks broken. Don't know about anybody else, but I in no way abuse my units, and if this is typical quality of Humminbird products, when I replace, I'll replace with a brand that has better quality products.

The only problem I have had with the SD cards in mine was when the label on one of my Navionics card was peeling up on the edge and binding up in the card slot......If I had pushed harder instead of investigating what was wrong I would have damage the SD card slot.

**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

I contacted Humminbird today when I got home, and they informed me if the unit was over 1 year old, no warranty coverage for the unit. The courtesy repair fee would be 256.00...and I laughed.
I informed the man it wasn't anything I've done other than normal use in the boat, it's never been dropped, hit, kicked, or abused in anyway. I told him it has to be a quality issue with the unit, because if normal use on a lake breaks the sd slot then obviously your engineering of the unit was in error.
They said there was nothing they could do except for take my 256.00...I don't mind paying a small fee, but you can  almost buy those units used for that price.
I promptly told him it would be the last Humminbird product I ever buy, it'll either be Garmin, or Ray Marine from now on.....
