NMEA 0183 IN on 1198
« on: October 08, 2012, 12:40:44 PM »
see plenty of info on NMEA 0183 out via the GPS pigtail, what about IN ? I'd like the 1198c to take heading data from the autopilot for more accurate charting at slow speeds.

The 1198c Si unit can use the NMEA 0183 output from another device in place of its GPS Receiver.  You will need the As-HHGPS connection cable for this or you will have to sacrifice the connector for the GR50 GPS Receiver you have.

perhaps I found my answer? but will it still read the gaps at the same time:

1. Insert the Handheld GPS Cable’s NMEA-COM connector into the appropriate terminal slot on the back of your Fishing System control head. The slots are keyed to prevent reverse installation, so be careful not to force the connector into the holder. The pinouts of the Humminbird® NMEA data cable are as follows:
• Red Wire: +12V
• Black Wire: Ground
• Green Wire: NMEA In
• White Wire: NMEA Out.

Correct, no NMEA data in on the NMEA pigtail wire.

No, the unit will accept one NMEA data input at a time.  If your autopilot does not also output the NMEA position sentences, than the unit will not know where to plot your position on the map.  If all your autopilot outputs is the heading NMEA sentence than I do not think that it will work.
