798CXI HD SI Combo And DSC VHF (NMEA 0183)
« on: July 03, 2012, 06:42:32 PM »
Hi, first time post so apologies for asking a stupid question, I have a gut feeling I already know the answer but would like confirmation from some people with more brains than me  :)

Basically my Lowrance 5150 has decided to pack in leaving me with the 798CXI HD SI Combo as the only GPS device on the boat.  The Lowrance was providing the DSC info for my VHF via NMEA 0183 and if possible I'd like to connect the 798 up to do this instead, is this possible?  My gut feeling is that the Ethernet/NMEA 2000 on the 798 HD isn't going to allow me to do it but could somebody confirm this yay or nay?  If it's good news any idea what cable I'd need?

Many thanks,
Paul

You are correct: the Ethernet/NMEA 2000 will not allow you to communicate to your NMEA 0183 DSC radio - however, the NMEA 0183 output will.  To get this from an internal GPS unit like the 798cXi HD Si unit that you have you will need the AS-HHGPS cable.  Directions will be packaged with the cable for connection (White wire is NMEA + and Black wire is ground) and to let you know to set the NMEA Output menu to "On".

Cheers Greg, that qualifies as good news!  I feel much better knowing it's capable of outputting 0183.
