4.700 Software Available on Humminbird web site!
« on: October 12, 2009, 04:04:24 PM »
Should post this on the 1197 board but believe it will be more wide spread than that:

New software has been posted on the Humminbird web site this afternoon.  So far I only see software for the 1157c and 1197c Si units but believe there will be more to come.  Here’s what is listed for the 4.700 software for the 1197c Si units:

10/12/2009 12:00:00 AM - v4.700 Adds support for LakeMaster chart cards. Adds new SI sonar color palettes. Adds new 2D sonar color palettes. Improved GPS performance to provide higher chart update rates. Corrected problems with depth offset algorithm. Corrected SD card reporting incorrect size. New menu item for sound control. Corrected issue of GPS output becoming disabled in certain navigation modes. Corrected problem of snapshot not functioning in POS mode. Fixed centering issue when changing chart orientation. Corrected problem of displayed track becoming offset from boat. Sonar processing improved to increase trolling motor noise rejection. Fixes various cosmetic and minor operational defects.

While I was in a meeting late yesterday afternoon there was also posted on the Humminbird web site, the same 4.700 software update for the 718, 728, 778c and 788c units.  There will be more throughout this week and possibly next week as well.  So be sure to log onto the Humminbird web site and check for updates for your Humminbird unit.

Some issues with the Humminbird web site when logging in: be sure to select the "Login" button with your mouse cursor or it will take you to a search page.

Also remember to reset the menus back to the factory defaults (use the "Restore Defaults" menu) before and after you update the software.

4.700 works like a charm.
Screen issues seem to be solved.
Switchfire is working.
New SI color's are better in our sandy waters.

Dit the update on a running machine with factory defaults

No other SI units have been updated yet!  Those are all 2d and chartplotter units.  This is a major update of alot of units and the software is going to be released in phases throughout the week from what I have heard.  The 997 is definitely getting the update!  ;) ;) ;)

As soon as there is an update, we will send out more emails to our members letting them know.

Easy guys… Robert has a 997 too so we’ll let you know when any of the Si units get this or any future software update.

Humminbird has the 4.700 update available for the 798c and 798ci units.  You can also find the downloads in the download section here.

798c SI Combo Update (version 4.700 - 0 bytes)

Description:
10/26/2009 12:00:00 AM - v4.700 Adds support for LakeMaster chart cards. Adds new SI sonar color palettes. Adds new 2D sonar color palettes. Improved GPS performance to provide higher chart update rates. Corrected problems with depth offset algorithm. Corrected SD card reporting incorrect size. New menu item for sound control. Corrected issue of GPS output becoming disabled in certain navigation modes. Corrected problem of snapshot not functioning in POS mode. Fixed centering issue when changing chart orientation. Corrected problem of displayed track becoming offset from boat. Sonar processing improved to increase trolling motor noise rejection. Fixes various cosmetic and minor operational defects.

Prerequisites:
You will need a working MMC/SD reader/writer device attached to your PC and a formatted MMC/SD card.

Instructions:
Download to your computer and use the HumminbirdPC program to upload your unit. You may also copy the uploaded software to an MMC/SD card and then insert that card into your unit to update its code. CAUTION! We highly recommend that you restore the defaults on your Humminbird unit prior to downloading any new software as it can create complications that can only be fixed at the factory.

Ive been trying to hold back and not beat a dead horse again, but I think i can no longer hold myself back....

I see once AGAIN the 797 gets no update, and i think it should now be obvious to everybody that humminbird, is just flat out not supporting the 797 with firmware upgrades. Its NOT a matter of memory or processing speed (for us unlucky enough to purchase a $1000 lemon);  Its simply a matter of humminbird not wanting to put forth the resources and manpower to port the firmware over to the 797 unit.   hummmmmmm.. lets see... there is not enough memory to give us a couple more sonor color pallets, and give us all the other minor fixes?! give me a break!!  If Humminbird would at least be upfront with us, and tell us the real reasons the 797 is no longer supported I would at least semi- respect that.  Why lie though? If you released an unupgradable lemon in the first place, you should at least allow us to pay for an upgrade.  I mean what could humminbirds cost be for a 798 head unit (no transducer, mount, etc)?... $200-$300 at most. It would be of no loss to them.

This is terrible customer support on Humminbird's part for us unlucky few 797 owners.  If the unit is NOT UPGRADEABLE, then WHY explicitly list it as a selling point for the unit!? It seems ALL other models are once again included in the update. WHY the Vandetta against the 797, or why does it seem so much inferior to all of the other models as far as upgradability?  And Furthermore, WHY is it still being activly sold by stores (authorized dealers) with NO mention that it is way beyond obsolete.

I have seen threads with input from HB which would indicate the 4.70 S/W changes are coming for the 797.  It sounds like they will not be available until Jan, like the 900 series.

There are many units that have not gotten the changes listed in the 4.700 software upgrade; not just the 797.  We have not stopped supporting this product.  The most recent units to get this software release are all going to be manufactured throughout the 2010 model year.  We stopped producing the 797’s when the 798’s took their place in our 2009 model year line up.  It and many other models are considered ‘legacy’ products and as such will receive those software upgrades that they have the capability to be able to use after the same features have been updated for all current year model units.  We still have to release all of the new model units for 2010.  So the 797, like all of the other model owners (me among them) will have to wait until after this is completed before the Engineers can start updating the legacy products.  I have been told that this will be after the first of the year.

As far as the 797’s not being upgradeable; there have been eight software updates that were released for the 797 since we first started building them.  Remember that these are free updates with new features that were not paid for when the units were originally purchased.

We do not and cannot control what a retailer does.  If they still have older units in stock and are selling them than that’s their business.  I would speak to them about it.  There is no vendetta against the 797 units or their owners.  The 797 is simply close to reaching its limit and what new features can be added to its original design.
