998 setup
« on: December 22, 2011, 06:35:22 PM »
Just about to purchase my long awaited 998 unit ;D. I was wondering what would be some good advanced settings to implement to get started? what type of SD card is most commonly used? Does everyone use a lake maps card or just use the base maps installed on unit? And with this new update, how do I get that and install that?

Many thanks for your time in getting me started into SI!!!!

Tom

Unless you are familiar with the HB products I would suggest you start with the factory defaults. Then as you gain familiarization you will understand what you are affecting when you make a change.
I would start by reading the manual and getting familiar with the contents especially where the setting pages are for any particular option.
You will want to decide what you like best and how it applies to your fishing.
I would also suggest going to the 998 part of this forum and reading past posts.
Another feature is to "search" for hits on the forum using the tab at the top of the main menu.
Be creative in your search terms.
An area you might want to check is the demo mode so you can see the unit in operation and how your settings affect the display.

For upgrading you can go to the HB site and register your unit. You will find the latest updates there. Or on this site go to downloads and select your unit.
Installing the update is sinmple as copying or download to a sd card on your computer.
Restore factory defaults on your unit.
Install the update on your unit.
Check the manual for the steps and follow them closely.

First off when you get your unit you will want to enroll in Humminbird's Select program, it will extend your warranty 1 year for free.

As Chuck stated, you should start with the default settings and learn from there.  You should also go to Doug Vahrenberg's site to view his 9 part seminar (towards the bottom), plus a number of good videos.  This should get you started understanding how the different setting work.

I use a 4 GB Sandisk Extreme III card, there are a lot of good cards available, start with making short recordings less then an hour it will be easier to view your recordings on Hummviewer or other programs.

You will also need a USB card adapter for your computer to download recordings.

Depending on how you use your recording you may want a larger card, to date I have never come close to filling my card.

I also have the smallest card I could find which is used just for updates.

Although some reformat their cards, I have not found this to be necessary, After transferring the data I erase the old data.

Also, you should erase the old updates before uploading new updates, so that your unit will update the latest program.

As far as lake maps you may want to start with the unit map then progress to either a Navionics or a LakeMaster card.  They are not cheap but have benefits showing finer detail on the lakes.  Make sure that the map program you decide to purchase have the lakes you want.  Also, spend some time looking at the detail of the different offerings of each map program.
