1198 issue
« on: October 31, 2011, 11:43:27 AM »
Brief history ..while on the water  i had this 997 and thought it was transducer prob and still reads like this on sonar.... SI works fine ....down scan and sonar doesnt auto depth range it just reads 4.6 even though its set for it .....   (not on water) I put a 1198 on yesterday and the sonar page displays the colors like in the photo ... Im not in the water im on dry ground shouldnt it still read properly...

If the transducer is not in the water, you may get some very erratic
readings.   It cannot measure depth correctly unless it has water to
ping in.

Probably the temperature will be correct because it will be measuring the
air temperature.
I wouldn't worry about any weird things shown on the 2d sonar screen
until your boat is in the water.

Also, make sure your maximum depth setting is greater than or equal to the
depth of the water you are in.

Did you use a Y cable and get a shoot-thru transducer?

I have my 898c set up with:

AS SIDB Y Cable
AS BP WeatherSense
898C
XP-9-20-T In Hull Puck transducer

I have the In-hull transducer mounted in the bilge area and the side image transducer transom mounted under my jack-plate.

Hi

What type off Y-cable do you use, there are two diffrent:
AS SIDB Y: allows you to use two transducers on one unit without the use of a transducer switch.
AS SILR Y : allows the use of two side imaging transducers with one unit without the need for a transducer switch.

If you are using either of the transducer splitter cables (aka: Y-cable) that Rudiger mentioned; try removing it and connecting each transducer up by itself to the 998 unit and see which gives you better results.  I am assuming here that the problem happens when you are idling and not just when moving at high speeds, so be sure and test at an idle speed as well.

Was this with the boat in the water when you did this last test?  The boat needs to be in the water to test the transducer and sonar.

When you stated that the transducer for this unit was “mounted through my hull under my transom” do you mean that it is mounted inside of the hull or is the transducer mounted under the hull and has a ‘stem’ that is inserted through a hole in the hull?

You keep saying that you have a Y-cable but is this the one that is connected to the InterLink or is this Y-cable connected to the transducer?  If connected to the transducer: take it out and plug the new transducer you have directly to the unit and test it again on the water.  Also make sure that the boat is in 5+ feet of water when testing it and turn off the 788 unit.

If that does not show any improvement then try connecting the 788 unit up to only the power and transducer and see if you get the same or different results.
