How to interpret DI images below bottom line?
« on: March 04, 2011, 07:10:58 PM »
Hello all,   noob here with a new 597 DI  on its way to me.   I have been doing lots of reading online and the Humminbird manual for the 597 di.  I am unclear how to interpret the Images below the bottom.   It appears that when you see SI images next to DI images that it is showing you a what is to the side of your image on the bottom.   Here is an example http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=1617.0  you can see the ditches going down in the DI image but I am assuming its showing them going to the side.

So how do you interpret that?   Is it showing one side or the other from your boat?  I guess I am trying to figure out how you get some type of depth perception of the bottom.     Where the traditional sonar shows you how hard the bottom is.  This appears to let you see down and to the side also.

For example if you see a tree on your screen is the tree directly below you?  If so when you see shadows on the bottom image below it.  Is that to the right or left of your boat?

here is another example of something showing up on SI then the DI image it appears to show it on the bottom of the DI screen giving you a width to go with your depth?  Not sure what terminology to use.

Also if this is the wrong place mods feel free to move it.  Since there was no DI only forum I wasn't sure where to put it.

blake711,

Welcome to the forum.  It is very important to understand the difference in the Down Imaging for the 500 series with a true, dedicated Down imaging Transdcuer and the Down Imaging for the SI units that is a software interpretation from the Si transducers.

The 500 series DI transdcuer is a thin fan shaped beam that faces directly down.  The SI beams in the higher series face out to the side and what you see on the screen will have some data directly below the boat but will also show objects out to the side.  The 500 series DI will show some info out to the side, but the image will be much better than the SI derived view.

I hope that helps.  Maybe I can find some drawings of the beam angle to help with this.

Good Luck,

Robert

thanks for the info guys.  Are there any DI images online other than the basic ones on the humminbird website?   Also Greg can you comment if those images are off a DI only unit?
