problem with HB PC ver 3.2.2 2011-01-26 16:43
« on: February 18, 2011, 10:23:56 AM »
I am trying to import gps data to HB PC
can anyone give me another workaround other than manually entering years of waypoints.

I just downloaded this version of HB PC and it does NOT allow SAVE AS in txt files. looks like all it will do is work with HB GPX files  >:(

I  entered a few waypoints manually and was going to export to text file from HB PC for header and format information.

My older garmin system does not use an SD card and I use mapsource ver 4.0 to manipulate my gps data which is loaded on my hard drive for it.  I can export information with mapsource as a text file (or unknown file type .DXF) .
I was planning to converting garmin waypoints ect. to txt then spread sheet then importing that via new txt file with proper header to HB PC.  Because i cant export to txt i do not have the format/header information that the latest ver of HB PC uses.

that was information gleened from a post by Greg  about saving things to an excel document.

mt,
What you need to do than is to download the older pre-Google Earth version of HumminbirdPC (version 2.5.8) from this web site:
http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=95.0

Install it and use its ability to open a *.gpx file but export it as a *.txt file.  I copy and paste that back and forth into Excel.

But don’t tell anyone about this though.  I am typing very lightly so that the letters will fade out after you read this…

I like GPSBABEL. It will convert from\to all the common formats including Garman, HB, GPX, and text(CSV) files.
Take a look at it here.       http://www.gpsbabel.org/

Hi,

Like Dennis mentioned, I use GPS Babel to do GPS data conversions. I still use MapSource though to edit most my GPS data. It can read and write the *.gpx format.

To save your Garmin file so you can open it in Humminbird PC ~ select Save As from the File menu in Mapsource. Then, in the Save As window, click on the arrow on the drop down box for the Save as type  and select the "GPS eXchange Format (*.gpx)" option. If version 4 doesn't support that, you can download and install the Mapsource update from the Garmin website ...

MapSource software version 6.16.3 (as of October 25, 2010)

MapSource For Legacy Operating Systems software version 6.11.5

You shouldn't have any problem opening the file in Humminbird PC. To open files saved from Humminbird PC in Mapsource ~ select Open from the File menu. Then,  in the Open window, click on the arrow on the drop down box for the Files of type and select either the "GPS eXchange Format (*.gpx)" option or the "All Files (*) option.

:(    I did have problems with HB PC when I went to upload the GPX file from Mapsource. I kept getting "invalid waypoint in route" and it would not load. I had to go the circle route through EASYGPS, then HB PC Ver 2.5 then HB PC  3.2.2 to get them converted. I did all ths last friday took all day and late night with me doing some editing as I went. I then loaded all the files to HB PC was playing with them and mistakenly deleted them from my hard drive when I deleted them from HB PC.    :-[     >:(    Just spent sunday re-doing the conversion.

I got lots of experience  by not reading the "HB PC fine print/directions"   ;)

thanks for all the helpful information

Mel,

I guess I was a little optimistic when I wrote "You shouldn't have any problem opening the file in Humminbird PC."  Sometimes you have to go with the "voodoo computing" / "gymnastic computing" approach (at least until you get your data compatible with both systems ;-).

It's a little more complex to use GPS Babel, but it does have some additional conversion options and filters that can come in handy. Mapsource, HB PC and Humviewer can all pass GPS data to Google Earth. You can edit it in GE and re-save the data from GE in their *.kml (or *.kmz) format. Then you can use GPS Babel to convert it to either the Garmin or HB PC format.

thanks, Darrell

I will keep the info about GE & gps babel in mind. Who knows it might come in handy sometime.

Colt 45 posted part of this  concerning depth information imported from Garmin
http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=1764.0

“I opened HB PC and "Close All" to clear current data.  Then File/Open but this time, choose file type .gdb from the drop down File Type box.  There are File types for Garmin and Lowrance.  HB PC will display a screen about automatically creating a .gpx file, click OK to continue.  The file will open and this time the depth will be displayed.”
I then tried something along this method (wish I’d found this sooner).
I Substituted .MPS instead of .GDB and it worked ; but i had to save the mps file  in my updated mapsource program ( vers 4.00  to ver 6.xx )  without a map

It immediately created the .GPX file  as it came open in my HB PC. Bringing depth and other way point information. Routes and tracks.

Mel,

Using Colt 45's tip ~ did HB PC import your "invalid waypoint in route" and if so how did it handle it?

The one time I re-tried with the new method to bring in the .mps file directly into HB PC I had the error again. So I re-opened the .mps file in mapsource and deleted the map from the maps tab and saved it again in .mps format. It then loaded into HB PC just fine.

When I use mapsource to reopen the file or create a new file for a location /keeping info from a trip, I'll have to add the map back in so that things will show up on the mapsource map.  Then I'll save without it when I'm ready to bring it back into HB PC.

One thing I just noticed about HB PC that I liked you can open several files/locations at the same time and cut and paste or drag between them. Also when you close a file it does an auto save to the files you close.
