Title: 997c SD slot problems
Post by: LocDown on October 05, 2011, 09:47:20 PM
I just purchased a used 997c and I have installed a Navionics Hotmaps Premium card 1 slot and a blank card(2gb and 16gb). I have tried both cards and the slots will intermittently "lose connection" ..say like I have a sonar recording going on, it will give me a mmc/sd error and stop recording. And also it sometimes displays "Loading Charts" (sometimes blinking), after the chart map disappears from the screen. I have the latest update installed on the unit. Every now and then the unit will work fine but I would like it 100% working.

The only thing I would suggest is to make sure your
battery and connections are good and tight.

You may have an intermittent power problem because of a borderline
bad battery and/or loose connections.
Charge your battery and have it load tested.

Also,
Are your SD cards compatible with your unit.
Cards that are too slow may cause recording problems.
Some people have also found that the newest ultra fast cards are not 100% compatible.
Let us know what brand and speed of SD cards you are using.

The power connections are good.
Battery is the same one as before.

As for the SD cards, I am trying a 2gb Sandisk Fullsize card (unknown speed ..older card) and a 16gb microSDHC Wintec Filemate Class 10 card.

I've had the 16gb card in my 798c with no problems. I have formatted it before using it in the 997c.

I have been fiddling around with this and it seems to be something with the slots themselves. once the card is in and nothing else touches it, not even a wiggle, then everything works fine. But if I try to close the door on it then it loses connection. So it seems like the slot isn't applying enough pressure to the card to stay in place.

This really doesn't mean anything.
The battery should be checked.

I've never heard of this problem before.
I don't think the slot cover touches the cards when it is closed.
Maybe the slot cover is not lined up properly.
Or
Maybe there is something on the inside of the slot cover that touches the card when
it's closed.

Maybe Greg has heard of this problem before.

The battery is connected to the charger while all of this is being tested. So, I'm getting at least 13volts the whole time.
As for the slot cover, it gets all funky just putting the slot keyway in. .haven't even made it to locking it down yet. So I have no idea on that.
I will close the door and wiggle it around until everything works correct.

I like the way my 798's door design better than the 997.

May be something wrong with the SD card readers inside of the unit.  The only thing that you can do is send it into Humminbird to have it looked at.

If you have a friend try his card reader door. May save some time on sending it in..

Haha, my friend's don't have fish finders. They follow me around. As for sending it into Humminbird. I might have to next week, or sell it and go with the new 998 like I should have.

Aren't the SD slots individually spring loaded?
From what I understand, the door is only to prevent water from splashing
around in there.  It's not designed to hold in the SD cards.

Maybe there is something broken on the door which is allowing it
to close too far, thus applying pressure to the SD card(s), which
makes them pop out.

Maybe some type of spacer/ plumbers washer can be glued on the
inside of the door, preventing it from closing too far.

ITG...you are correct in that the door is there to waterproof the card slots. However the door design is basic and could be causing some interferrence. Plastic being heat sensative and warping could occur. Or some other external influence causing mishappen.
Not saying this is the only failure point of the card reader but certainly since it is having some trouble closing properly it might be the cause.
Maybe he can get up with another and try a swap. Or maybe HB can send him a new door for starts...

3 pics are of the 997c:
1) left card inserted
2) card door
3) both cards inserted

the right slot seems to hold the card a little higher out of the slot.

this is my current fix:
short piece of business card folded in half, inserted on side opposite the contacts of the sd card itself.

I think somebody must have tried to jam something in the slots
or put the sd card(s) in backwards.
Some gap is bigger than it needs to be.

Some of the mapping cards have a label that is prone to binding in the card slot....be careful about that.  I pulled the label off of mine.

The labels on my cards are fine. Nothing out of the ordinary.

You'd have to call HB customer support to get an estimate of the repair charges.

If it is out of warrenty, see if you have a computer friend who may look at the card slot. This person may see something that might be an easy fix.....

It is out of warranty and I am the computer guy :). I don't know if I have the balls to take it apart tho.

Well,
The good thing is that you don't have to take the
cards out that often.
Your method of putting something in there to hold it
may work out OK.

Not sure if I would attempt the take apart either.  but you seem to have bypassed the problem..
Can you get the watertight door to close????

@ITGEEK
Bad thing is, I do take the cards out after every trip to replay the sonar on the computer.

@sonar2000
the door does close with that slip of paper in there.

I am going to send it in for repairs.

You can also replay the sonar on the machine.

Good luck with it.

Yes replay is slow and not very well suited to studious review.  Which is why Humviewer, YellowFin and other are so popular.
It is very very hard to skip around in a replay where in the viewers you can just point and click to go to a specific part of the recording...

correct, I have more problems trying to view it on the unit than on the computer.

And in a viewer you can print the spot you want or or interested in looking at...
Printer and viewers are fantistic these days.
Along with photoshops and the enhancement that goes with them..
