Title: Error message: Invalid characters
Post by: Jolly Roger on September 02, 2010, 04:36:32 PM
Greg or Robert:

I created a ton of waypoints of Lake Constance in HBPC. If I want to upload them to my SD card, I get this error message:

[attachment=1]

If I click on the continue button, all the waypoint names are change to numbers starting with 5000 and the icons are changed to waypoint icons.

How can I fix this?

Harry, I think the default for the name is limited to 4 positions.  also special chaacters such as #, * are not valid naming characters.  Thids could be a problem with the HB code.  Hopefully Robert or Greg may get on tonight and answer.
Although Greg might be busy in his reading and comprehensiion 101 course.   ;D.. ::)

Hm,
I already shorted the names that were too long, but that didn't help. I created waypoints in the past and was able to upload them to the SD card and the unit accepted them as well.

Wow, Harry.  dont know now.  Maybe HB could hire us to test new code for them.   ::) ;D :D
Maybe Greg can stand in on this also.

Harry,
On some of those I know that it is the length of the waypoint name and on others you are using some invalid characters.  I’m not on a PC that has HumminbirdPC on it so cannot look this up right now (I’m still in class!).  Try looking in the Help section of HumminbirdPC for waypoint naming or something like that for a listing of the number of characters allowed as well as invalid characters.

Still havn't figured out where the problem is.....

I created a new waypoint and saved it directly without any changes. Still the same error message:

I already deleted HBPS and reinstalled after a new download.
Is there a magic trick to get rid off of the old version for sure?

Don’t know what to tell you Harry.  I just tried adding a waypoint with the same name, lat/lon, depth and even coordinate and depth measurement systems (decimal degrees and meters) and it worked on my computer.  I did not have a bunch of other *.gpx files open though.  Maybe it was trigerring off of one of them?  Try closing all of the other *.gpx files and try just the one waypoint again.

I was always told to use the Add/Remove function in the computer to remove programs.

Harry, here is a great freeware uninstaller that does a better job than the Windows Add/Remove Programs....http://download.cnet.com/Revo-Uninstaller/3000-2096_4-10687648.html (http://download.cnet.com/Revo-Uninstaller/3000-2096_4-10687648.html)

Thanks for advice guys,

I finally got it, BUT:

I removed the latest version of HBPC and installed an OLDER version (3.0.26).

My computer runs on Windows XP.

Strange… can you now open and transfer the data with the new HumminbirdPC after it has been through the older version of HumminbirdPC?  I’ve heard of one case of this happening but the issue was with invalid Lat/Lon numbers.

Nope,

there's no new version of HBPC on my computer. It's the older version that worked and I left it so far. I have a runtime error message showing up if I want to show the waypoints in Google Earth, but I can live with that: If I want to view a waypoint, I just use HumViewer and can get the point or track displayed.
