I have used my 798cisi unit only 2-3 times and think it is great. I was in the ocean over a reef last week (40+/- depth ) and I could see what I think were fish on the sonar and we were catching fish....but the unit did not identify any fish on the screen. I did turn the fish id on through the menu....or at least thought I did. Am I missing something? Do I need to adjust sensitivity? How small of a fish will the unit identify?

Attach a picture (snapshot) of your question. It is easier to answer if we can see what you are looking at also.

When the unit id's a fish is the fish shown as a symbol on the screen ( like a fish shape ) or do they just show up as blimps of various sizes?

Fish ID will show up as a fish. Any large object suspended in the water will also show up as a fish. I prefer to use mine with fish ID off. Run your unit in split screen where it uses side imiging. The4n you will know if you are seeing fish.

I think HB did one step better, it showed both fish symbols and the return signal (the inverted vees). With that you can basically decide for yourself whether the return signal could qualify as fish or not.
There was also an article from a guide (if I'm not mistaken) on how to setup the fish ID if you are going to use it. It focussed on crappie fishing, but the concept of why he used fish ID is very good despite the overall concensus of fishermen to turn fish ID off.

This is what the Fish ID will show. I had the DI set to narrow view to attempt to match the 200 khz cone. Didn't catch any fish indicated.

Sorry for the late reply. File converted to ASCII text. Hopefuly it is of some use. I had only use my 737 once, so I can't comment much. So much work, so little time to fish.. :'(

Thanks, and thanks for the link as well. Hopefully I can start figuring out how to use this thing to actually identify fish.

Another use for fish id that I found. Somewhat eliminate the need to split screen 83/200 Hz.
