Title: Trouble connecting to PC
Post by: Gillfisher on April 11, 2010, 09:28:13 AM
I purchased the PC connect cable and connected it to a radio shack usb to serial converter and my 998c si. The 998 will go into pc connect mode and HBPC will show a unit connected, with no information and no download upload arrows below the unit tab in HBPC. I've changed the port numbers on the radio shack usb to serial in device manager from com 1 to com 7 and also changed the speed from 2400 to 128000, always with the same results - no information from the unit. Ive also tried with the sd card in and out, ive resarted the unit and HBPC between al of these steps. Any idea what settings i am missing to get the connection?

Hello Gillfisher and first of all: Welcome to the Forum!

Not sure if this helps, but this is from the HBPC FAQs:

"Q: I don’t see the Upload or Download commands in the Unit Tab or MMC/SD Tab.

A: Once the Unit Tab or MMC/SD Tab is active, click on the PC Tab to open it. The Upload and Download command buttons will appear on the device tabs when the PC Tab is open. "

I recommend to read through the HBPC user guide which can be accessed by pressing "F1" in HBPC.

Good luck / Harry

When I click on the tab there are no upload/download arrows like on the PC tab, where the track, route and way-points are on the unit tab it shows zero for all even though I have 700 way-points and 10 tracks. The PC and unit are seeing each other but there is no information being passed back and forth. My unit type doesn't show up but the serial number does.

Hm,
now you got me out of ammo!  ???

As a work around:
Download the waypoints, tracks and routes to your SD card via "export all Nav Data" in the Navigation menu tab of your unit. Then use a SD card reader to transfer them to your PC. Make sure you have a high capacity compatible card reader if you have a SD card bigger than 2 Gigabytes.

Let us know what happens.

Regards / Harry

Jolly, I was using the SD card method already with no issues. I just thought it would be easier to do a direct connect instead. Hopefully someone has come across the same issue and will be able to help me with the settings. I think it has to do with the radio shack driver or the virtual serial connection settings.

Gillfisher,
I was almost done reading your and Harry’s post on this before it hit me: he’s got a 998c Si unit!  The new 800 and 900 series units will not work with the HumminbirdPC program due to the different language their programming is written in.  That’s why there is no communication between them.  Don’t know when they will make a version of HumminbirdPC that will work with these new units.

Greg, thanks for pointing that out.I would have wasted countless more hours trying to figure out what settings I needed to change.
